There are many good reasons to go green and most of them concern the direct impact to our environment. But there are many others that you may not have considered. For instance, greening your business will boost your morale and that of your employees. Using less toxic products and including your staff in green decision making has been shown to reduce absenteeism and increase productivity.
It’s great public relations too. Your customers and clients will view you as a responsible member of society and someone who wants to be a part of the solution. Find ways to publicize your good green-works and see how it impacts your bottom line. Promote being green on your website too. Write a green mission statement. Offer links for additional information and blog with your customers. Remember, in small business, you are the image of your company. Make the story about you by taking your business green. It’s a very cool story to tell and one that people respond to.
Want more substantial reasons for going green? How about this; “greening also saves you money”. Simply put, waste is inefficient. The more waste your business produces, the less efficient it is and he more costly your operations. By striving to produce less waste, use less energy and paper products, you can actually cut costs and take huge strides to lessen your environmental impact. For example did you know that a typical office throws out about 350 pounds of paper per employee each year? By changing to double-sided copying and printing you’ll save 50% of this waste.
Here is a way to begin the process for your business. Start with asking yourself a few questions first.
What are my reasons for going green?
How does being green work within my business plan?
Does it give me a competitive edge?
Are there any areas where I cannot be green? Does that impact the whole?
Do I know someone who is already green? Can they help me?
And remember to keep it simple. When you begin to plan your greening, keep the “three R’s” in mind: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Going green is a worthwhile endeavor, not only for our environment but also for the welfare of small businesses everywhere. Reducing waste and energy use is a proven cost savings devise and in this economy, saving money is key to your future success. So start with the most obvious and potentially easiest cost saving idea; reduce your consumption in all things and after that the rest should be as easy as putting one foot in front of the other.
The greening process is not instantaneous though. It takes time to accomplish this worthy goal. The good news is that if you contact EcoRing for help you’ll find that a lot of the work has been done for you. EcoRing has greened dozens of businesses in Western Sonoma County. In fact, EcoRing is the only organization in the country to have certified more than thirty businesses as green. That’s a big deal and it’s cutting edge. Not only that, but the EcoRing greening process mirrors the Sonoma County green certification pilot project. That means that once the county completes its project, your business will not only be an EcoRing certified green business, but also will be certified green by Sonoma County.
