About EcoRing

EcoRing's is a North Bay nonprofit that promotes EcoTourism and green travel.  Our Partners are green certified businesses in the tourist industry.  We sponsor EcoTours that feature low-carbon forms of transportation and utilize green-certified lodging and restaurants.  EcoRing initiatives promote the construction of low-carbon travel infrastructure such as rail lines, multi-use pathways, watercraft facilities and electric car charging stations.  EcoRing works with tourism businesses to improve their energy and water efficiency and recycling programs.  We promote tourism that protects the environment, improves the economy, and educates both local citizens and tourists about how a healthy environment supports a healthy economy.

EcoTourism Goals

  • Prove the economic and physical feasibility of an alternative-transportation eco-tourism tours through Sonoma and Marin Counties.
  • Create public and political support for the funding of alternative transportation infrastructure (trains, trails, electric car charging stations, bike paths, equestrian trails).
  • Stimulate the local economy by extending the tourist season and provide support for local nonprofits, tourism related green businesses, and local artists.
  • Provide the financial incentives to businesses to obtain green certification by EcoRing.
  • Forge an alliance among environmental, business, trail, equestrian, bicycle and rail organizations.
  • Promote the use of affordable public transit for both area residents and tourists.

Our Program

Green Business Marketing

We want to provide an incentive for businesses to green their operations. Therefore, Ecoring markets for our tourism businesses Partners that have received or started the process of California Green Business Certification or other environmental certification. We market them on our website, when we table for events, with travel agents, concierges and at trade shows.  We provide signs identifying our Partners as Green Certified Businesses.  We sponsor EcoOdyssey tours that feature our Partners' food, lodging, and transportation

Green Business Resources

EcoRing provides resources to our business Partners.  These in include consulting for those seeking California Green Business Certification, energy and water conservation workshops, and a listing of other businesses that provide green services and products.  We provide information on new green products and services to our Partners.  We keep them informed of progress on a developing green travel infrastructure.

Multi-use Trails

Ecoring advocates for new bicycle, walking and equestrian trails.  We have identified several key links in our green travel network that need development including a Jenner-to-Armstrong hiking/equestrian trail, a North Pacific Coast Railroad Heritage Multi-use Trail from Sausalito to Duncans Mills in western Marin and Sonoma Counties, a Petaluma-to-Sebastopol multi-use trail, a Sonoma to Santa Rosa trail including the Southeast Greenway in Santa Rosa, the North South Greenway, a multi-use trail from Navato to the Golden Gate Bridge, and the SMART multi-use trail from Larkspur Ferry Terminal to Cloverdale.

Water Trails

EcoRing advocates for two "water trails":  The Russian River Water Trail and the Petaluma River Water Trail.   When completed, water trails will provide docking, watercraft storage, restrooms and convenient lodging and food for those touring by watercraft.

Electric Trails

EcoRing encourages the development of "electric trails" for electric vehicles. Strategic location of electric car charging stations at lodging and restaurants allows electric vehicle owners to tour in their low-carbon car.  Specifically, we are encouraging the development of the Pacific Coast SunTrail by Sunspeed Enterprises.

Rail Infrastructure

EcoRing advocates for the creation of rail infrastructure.  We are members of Friends of SMART, a citizens committee supporting the construction of the Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART). SMART is a high-speed commuter/tourist train from Larkspur Ferry Terminal to Cloverdale through San Rafael, Navato, Petaluma, Cotate, Rohnert Park, Santa Rosa, Windsor and Healdsburg scheduled to open in Spring of 2017.  We have also proposed an east-west streetcar line from Oakmont to Sebastopol via the Railroad Square SMART station in Santa Rosa.  The all-electric battery-driven "TransSonoma Transit" line would link State, County and City Parks as well as serving Hospitals, shopping centers and public buildings.
